ECHO REVIEW: This is going to be really good or really bad

As a movie and TV show enthusiast, one can usually see if a show is going to be really good or really bad by episode 2. I can tell that Echo is going to be one of those good shows.

Any show that keeps me entertained while reading subtitles gets an A+ in my book. This show tackles Native American culture in a way that I have never seen done before in a Marvel project, while also tying it back into the fact Maya has superpowers!

Maya’s superpowers were not something I was expecting because in the comics she only has the ability to copy anyone's fighting style. I hope her superpowers are explored more. I also understand why the showrunners gave her superpowers. It could become repetitive with the possible addition of Taskmaster in future projects, aside from when we saw her last in “Black Widow.”

In this episode, Maya is finally initiating her plan for revenge against Fisk. To do that, she requests the help of her cousin Biscuits. He is one of the best characters in the show so far. He seems to be the type who does anything for family and I find that relatable.

With the help of her cousin, she sets out and proceeds to run on a train, evade some bad guys, and place an explosive device in one of the shipping containers. When she was all done, she jumped off of the train into the truck her cousin was driving.

The shipping container arrives at the Fisk warehouse and just before it’s about to be opened, it blows up. After this, we see Henry, the man from Maya’s past and the bowling rink discussing with those around him how catastrophic that explosion was for the business and those inside. He knew, however, Maya was the one to do it. So, he went to speak to her. Expecting this visit, Maya sits on the roof of the house waiting for him. Once he arrives they have a spirited conversation about why she can’t fight Fisk alone and that what she did made her just like Fisk.

After that coversation, Maya receives a text from her cousin, Bonnie, who has found out that Maya is back in town. Bonnie and Maya were best friends growing up and since Maya left to go live with her father in New York, they tried to keep in touch. Bonnie’s heart was broken once when Maya left and now that she’s back and hasn’t told Bonnie it will most be broken again.

In this episode, we can see the lengths Maya is willing to go to avenge her father. It seems like she simply does not care at all and the only thing she sees is revenge.

I give the episode an 8/10.

It loses two points solely due to some cringe-worthy scenes. For example, when Maya was on top of the train, after the first jump, she looked back and smiled at the camera for 5 seconds. It made me feel very uncomfortable.

I am really enjoying this show and can not wait to watch more of “Echo.”
