Daredevil is Back

Daredevil is back! This is one of, if not the best, signs in a while that Marvel is actually trying to gain the audience they lost back.
I have been waiting for “Daredevil,” created by Drew Goddard and starring Charlie Cox, to return ever since the end of the show back in October 2018. “Daredevil: Born Again” is a continuation of the original Netflix show, which was released in 2015 and is rated TV-MA just like its predecessor.
The first two episodes of the new show were released on March 4 on Disney+ for the world to view. The second the show dropped, I was seated on my couch and ready to see how the directors and writers revived one of my favorite Marvel characters.
Spoilers Ahead!
In not even the first 15 minutes of the show, Foggy Nelson, the best friend of Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil), is shot by a villain called Bullseye, who was first introduced to the fans in season three of the Netflix show.
Karen Page, another friend of Murdock, witnesses everything and sits with Nelson, trying to keep him from bleeding out. As Daredevil realizes what happened, he fights Bullseye to the best of his abilities in a beautifully shot take, up a stairwell onto a roof. During this one shot, due to Daredevil’s powers, we as the audience can hear Nelson’s heart rate steadily decline and eventually stop.
This scene gave me chills and truly had me in tears because the showrunners didn’t even give us a chance to take it in. That is when I realized people are either going to love this decision or hate it and turn the show off.
I, however, agree with the decision to kill off Nelson's character. In order for Daredevil to be “born again,” he first has to kill the side of him that is Daredevil – and the catalyst for that was, unfortunately the character who gave the show life dying.
We get no funeral. Page leaves New York for San Francisco, and Murdock is left behind to do everything to honor of his best friend.
Murdock starts a new firm, gets Bullseye a life sentence, and begins a relationship with an amazing therapist. How could this go wrong?
Fisk, the overarching villain of the original series who gave Murdock a serious run for his money, comes back to New York after what happened in “Echo,” another Marvel TV series on Disney+, to seemingly do things the straight and narrow way, which was the most obvious lie that even a five year old could pick up on it.
The show also introduces a new vigilante called White Tiger played by Kamar De Los Reyes, making him the first Puerto Rican superhero displayed on screen, which is amazing. The actor sadly passed away this December, but I know he gave it his all in this role, and I am ready to see his performance throughout the season.
I enjoy that this season is giving us more of Murdock’s day-to-day life as a lawyer. In season three of the original show, all we get is him running around in costume all day, trying to save New York from Fisk and Bullseye. Season three is one of my favorite seasons from the show, but I did miss seeing Murdock and Nelson working cases together in order to help innocent people go free.
If you are okay with a little bit of change, new characters, and new ideas, I suggest you watch the new “Daredevil” show because it is absolutely excellent so far, and I am waiting excitedly, on the edge of my seat every Tuesday to watch the next episode.
The first two episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” receive a 10/10 from me.
