Journalism Coordinator
Reports to: Program Director
Time: Part Time; 24 hrs/month; In person and remote work
Compensation: $30/hour
Overview:
The Journalism Coordinator is the adult advisor to the Journalism team of CHARM’s Student Editorial Board. They work with approx. 12-15 youth editors in producing bi-monthly articles for The CHARM Report over the course of the school year. They are responsible for planning and preparing for weekly editorial board meetings. They assist youth journalism editors with project management and coordination, adherence to publishing timelines, as well as team-building and developing skills/knowledge connected to the journalism industry. This role also supports outreach initiatives, including tabling at events, canvassing schools with flyers, and helping with recruitment and visibility efforts.
The coordinator must have strong knowledge of the journalism industry in Baltimore. Experience working in the journalism field is required. Experience facilitating youth programming is a plus. A high school diploma is required; college experience or a college degree is preferred. They must attend regularly scheduled meetings with the Program Director and provide updates, proactively seek support when needed, and collaborate with the Publications Coordinator and staff on special projects as assigned.
Ongoing projects:
Planning for weekly student editorial board meetings aligned with organizational goals and student input
Facilitating weekly meetings with 12–15 youth editors on Tuesdays from 4:00PM–5:30PM
Fostering an inclusive, engaging space that centers youth voicesConducting necessary follow up with editors between meetings, or when editors are absent
Managing attendance, timesheets, and student editor pay submission
Collaborating with Publications Coordinator and students to prepare and clean up space after meetings
Supporting outreach efforts such as tabling and canvassing
Attending regular meetings with the Program Director and providing timely updates
Collaborating with the Publications Coordinator and supporting additional tasks for special projects as needed
Occasional projects:
Collaborating across teams to plan team-wide activities, panel discussions, and field trips
Supporting student editors in planning and hosting a publication party
Writing copy for newsletter, social media, and website about recent projects
Participating in outreach or community events to promote CHARM programs
